This beautiful 2 story hand hewn cedar log house is in the process of being taken down, log by log for the owner of the property. The log house measures approximately 32 feet wide x 18.5 feet deep.
The house was built in 1758. The cedar logs were cut from the property.
Originally, there was a front porch, but it was removed a long time ago. The original fireplace in what we consider to be the living room, was built out of stone. It was replaced with a brick fireplace.
A couple of logs on the front of the house are rotten, so we have secured the wall.
The logs were chinked with mud and/or horse hair or pig hair. The original chinking is still in place between numerous logs. The other interesting detail, is that stones were used to fill the void between the logs. Fascinating!
In the mid 1800's, newspaper was used to protect the interior side of the logs so that lathe and plaster could help block the cold air from coming into the house between the logs. We have removed all of the plaster and lathe.
The second story area is in GREAT condition. We removed the beaver board ceiling and insulation today, revealing the log rafters and cedar boards for the underlayment for the metal roof. EXCELLENT condition!
The floors are covered with carpet, so we don't know what condition they are in.
