This is a World War II Elgin A-8 navigator's stopwatch. These were used by navigators on heavy (B-17, B-24, B-29) and medium (B-25, B26) and cargo (C-47) aircraft to determine air speed. This one is in functioning condition, has a 15-jewell movement, and the back case can be opened to see the works. The back is also factory engraved with U.S. Army Air Force information, including contract number and serial number. This is an authentic piece of U.S. history; during the war, these stopwatches could be used to get crews to and from their destinations.
